Market Reaction
to Friday’s NFPs

The U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls and Unemployment Rate are out this coming Friday, November 3, 2017, at 12:30 UK Time (GMT), and are expected to cause significant volatility in the markets.
An economic indicator that tends to trigger sharp market movements in the minutes leading up to its release and afterwards, the NFP is released by the U.S. Department of Labor on the first Friday of each month, outlining changes in the number of employees, excluding farm workers and those employed by the government, non-profit organisations and private households.

What to expect
this month:

Nonfarm Payrolls:
300K Consensus;
-33K Previous
U.S. Unemployment Rate:
4.2% Consensus;
4.2% Previous
This week’s NFP release, per market consensus, is expected to show that the U.S. economy added 300K jobs in October. In September, the U.S. economy shed jobs for the first time in 7 years, following disruptions from Hurricanes Harvey & Irma. The markets will be closely watching the average hourly earnings figures as well, which rose to 2.9% in September, demonstrating the fastest growth pace in 8 years. This pace is expected to slow down to 2.7% year-on-year in October and 0.2% month-on-month from September’s 0.5%.
If we see a significantly bad NFP release of < 230K, coupled with an Unemployment Rate > 4.2%, the markets will most likely see USD come under downward pressure. A strong NFP release of >390K, with the Unemployment Rate below 4.2%, will likely result in USD strengthening.
As always, it will be important to note any revision from the previous month (-33K) as this will impact market sentiment regardless of the current release.

b27fecde-c38c-4f38-bdb0-f4be0412e0b0.jpgMarket sentiment can really affect currency movements. What traders expect from the report has as much impact as the actual released data, if not greater.
b27fecde-c38c-4f38-bdb0-f4be0412e0b0.jpgA higher figure than the one registered during the previous month signifies an improvement in employment numbers. This, as well as the release of a higher-than-expected figure, mean an increase in the number of jobs created and are positive for both the U.S. economy and the dollar.
b27fecde-c38c-4f38-bdb0-f4be0412e0b0.jpgA lower figure than the one registered during the previous month, as well as a lower-than-expected figure, usually have a negative impact on the dollar as they demonstrate a drop in employment numbers.
