The S&P Stocks Set to Pop and Drop This Week

The stock market might be closed for Labor Day, but here at Schaeffer's, we're not wasting a minute of the long weekend!

To make the most of the quick 4-day trading week ahead, we asked our Quantitative Analysis team to find the S&P 500 stocks with the best & worst returns during the post-Labor Day stretch.

In the winners' circle, drug giant Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) boasts the highest percentage of positive returns, having ended the short holiday week higher in 9 of the last 10 years. However, BMY's average return is fairly modest, at just +1.39%.

Digging deeper into the data, the fattest mean return of the group belongs to United Rentals (URI), which has ended higher in 8 of the last 10 post-Labor Day weeks. On average, URI wraps up the 4-day gauntlet with a healthy return of +4.15%.

That said, thanks to its potent combination of a high percentage of positive returns, impressive average return, inflated short-to-float ratio, and cheap short-term options, there's one consumer discretionary stock in particular our research team believes is set to rally during the days ahead.
