The Lost Sheep mine in Utah will produce fluorspar, a mineral designated as critical to national security by President Trump. Fluorspar is used to make high-purity chemicals. America previously had zero production.  ➤ Global gold holdings hit an all-time high ahead of the presidential election. Gold ETFs ended September with a record 3,880 tonnes of gold worth $235.4 billion, according to an analysis by Gold.org. Analysts said safe-haven buying before the November 3 vote in the U.S. caused the surge.  ➤ Canada worried about selling its bullion to China. Canadian government officials said they will review a proposed Chinese takeover of a northern gold mine. Shandong Gold – one of China’s biggest miners – offered $150 million for the project last May. A former security advisor to Canada’s prime minister said, “This purchase should not go forward… They are clearly adversaries.”  ➤ A controversial ocean reopened for oil exploration. The Filipino government said it will resume petroleum exploration in the South China Sea, Bloomberg reported. Work in the area halted in 2015 because of a dispute with China about offshore ownership. Oil stocks with interests in the play surged as much as 50%.  ➤ A natural gas-powered ship set a record for cargo. The Jacques Saade sailed from Singapore carrying 20,723 containers – the most ever for a cargo vessel.
