Top officials will likely approve an expanded copper stockpile next week, according to Reuters. China’s imports of the red metal surged 40% in the first nine months of 2020. Analysts blamed COVID-19 and trade tensions with the U.S. ➤ The moon is getting cellphone service. NASA awarded a $14.1 million contract to Nokia to build a mobile network on the moon – ahead of the first astronauts heading to the moon in 50 years. It’s expected to be up and running by 2022 – but will only be 4G. ➤ BHP Billiton scrapped expansion of a world-leading copper mine. The world-leading miner said it won’t proceed (for now) with a $2.5 billion growth project at the Olympic Dam mine in Australia. Studies of the geology didn’t support the economics of the expansion. Copper prices recently hit a 28-month high of $3.17 per pound. ➤ Mexico created a police department for mining. The special force of 120 officers will be deployed at remote mining operations in the northern Sonora desert. Criminal gangs recently pulled off sophisticated attacks to steal gold directly from mines. ➤ 25 rare chinchillas are blocking 3.5 million ounces of gold. Major miner Gold Fields is trying to relocate the endangered animals at a proposed gold mine in Chile.
