➤ The pandemic aid bill boosted strategic metals.
The federal government approved $800 million in funding for rare earths and other critical elements in last month’s spending package. Legislators also added a clause requiring annual monitoring of China’s investments in overseas mines.

➤ Canada blocked a Chinese takeover of its gold mines.
The Canadian government notified Shandong Gold of the decision to block its takeover of the Doris mine in northern Nunavut, regulatory filings showed. Shandong had offered to buy out the mine’s owner, TMAC Resources, for $150 million in May.

➤ Kazakhstan sold two uranium mines to China.
State-owned uranium miner Kazatomprom announced it will sell a 49% interest in both the Mynkuduk and Zhalpak mines to China’s CGN Mining. Under the deal, CGN will be entitled to take its portion of the mined uranium. Kazatomprom is the world’s largest uranium mining firm.

➤ Tesla sent a team to inspect Indonesia's nickel.
As reported by Reuters, the Indonesian government confirmed a Tesla delegation will arrive in January. Tesla is looking to invest in nickel supply chains in Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of the key battery metal. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said he personally talked to Elon Musk.

➤ A Russian oil major opened a cryptocurrency farm.
As reported by coindesk.com, Gazprom installed a shipping container of crypto mining units at its Khanty-Mansiysk oil field in Siberia. The equipment will be powered by waste natural gas produced with the crude oil. Gazprom said it plans to install more crypto units soon.
