Why Giving is Greater than Receiving

Hi Phan Hoa, Who's heard people say, "Giving is a much greater gift than receiving?" When I was a kid, that certainly didn't feel true. All I wanted was to receive gifts. And everything was measured by how much I received. How much money, how many toys, how many dresses, etc… For years I only concentrated on getting more and more stuff.  Then something changed. Living in Central America in my 30's I started volunteering at shelters where children were playing with deflated basketballs and headless dolls. Part of my work was helping them write letters to Santa Claus for a new ball or a new doll.  I wasn't in the position to adopt all of these beautiful children, but I definitely was in the position to give them what they asked for in those letters to Santa. It was then I found greater joy in giving than receiving. The feeling of giving to these children was by far greater than I ever had when I was receiving presents. It put a smile on my face bigger than I can remember. Today giving is my norm. Living in a country such as Guatemala there is never a shortage of people that need toys, clothes, medicine, food and so much more.  The best part is, even though I've been donating now for over 16 years, the joy in giving grows every year!  But I don't only love to give to people in need, I love giving to my fellow day traders as well.
