| Dear Paul, Coal and nuclear power dominated U.S electricity generation for decades. But that’s no longer the case. Thanks to improved technology and the push to reduce our carbon footprint, renewable energy is now the second-largest source of electricity in America. Only natural gas has a higher output today, as measured in kilowatthours (kWh).  Renewable energy accounted for 21% of U.S. electricity generation in 2020. That puts it slightly ahead of nuclear (20%) and coal (19%). Data from the Energy Information Administration shows that renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind and solar increased 9% in 2020. The biggest gains came from utility-scale solar projects, which grew 26% last year. And once the Biden administration passes its ambitious infrastructure bill, renewable energy will gain an even larger share of the U.S. electricity market.
