| Dear Paul, Electric vehicle (EV) sales have increased every year since they’ve been on the market. But the chip shortage is standing in the way of EV mass adoption. The chart below shows that the average gas-powered car has about $400 worth of semiconductors. EVs require a lot more chips, both for power (light blue) and non-power (blue). A partial hybrid needs $550 in chips, while a full hybrid or battery EV has almost $800 worth of semiconductors. That means an automaker can build two gas-powered cars for every EV. The chip shortage is causing huge delays for the global auto industry. Last month, Ford said customers that ordered its Mustang Mach-E EV would need to wait at least six additional weeks. Meanwhile, Tesla has struggled to find enough chips for its popular Model S and Model Y EVs. Its customers have reported delivery delays of weeks or even months. Volkswagen, Honda, General Motors, Nissan and Toyota have all changed or cut their production due to a lack of semiconductors. Ford even had to shut down one of its factories earlier this year because it couldn’t get the needed chips. But the semiconductor shortage won’t last forever. Right now, chip manufacturers are cranking up production. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, it typically takes 18 to 26 weeks to make a computer chip. That means more chips will arrive in late 2021 and early 2022. At that point, EV production can finally get back on track. And in a brand-new presentation, Ian King highlights one company that will benefit once the EV supply chain kicks into full gear. You can watch it now by clicking here.
