Nasdaq Today: Amazon Prime Day; Facebook Settles With FTC Posted: 12 Jul 2019 03:10 PM PDT Hits: 6 A trifecta of perfection: We had record highs in the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq today. Shareholders in the PowerShares QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ) have little to complain about as tech stock continues to mash out higher highs over the past few sessions. That's as FAANG stocks mostly lag and while rate cuts are likely. That said, it's not expected to be an amazing quarter when it comes to earnings. Companies are warning about their upcoming results, while analysts' estimates are looking at year-over-year declines for many names. Blame it on tough comps from tax cuts, tariff wars or what have you. It's not a perfect operating environment and with stocks near all-time highs, investors are either willing to overlooking a few quarters of underperformance and pay a higher valuation for earnings or they area simply too optimistic. We'll know soon enough when we start seeing these companies report. Facebook SettlementFacebook (NASDAQ:FB) shares spiked into the close on Friday, ending the session higher by 1.8%. Reports surfaced moments before the close that the company had come to terms on a $5 billion settlement with the FTC. The deal is expected to have some other privacy restrictions as well. While $5 billion is a lot of cabbage, it's roughly the same amount that FB set aside to pay for such an event. Clearing this obstacle removes an unknown event for investors, who like clarity and having uncertainty removed. Movers in the Nasdaq TodayIllumina (NASDAQ:ILMN) shares sank more than 15% on the day after the company warned about its upcoming results. This caught investors way off guard, considering the company just beat and raised estimates a few months ago. It's not a good look for the genomics company, as it now hovers in no man's land. (Here's the trade setup for ILMN stock now). One could argue that it also weighed on Invitae (NASDAQ:NVTA), although the company's $50 million acquisition could be what's shaking up the stock price. Down 1.75% on the day, it's at least worth pointing out. Square (NYSE:SQ) stock jumped almost 4% on Friday, giving it a 10% gain over the past few days. The stock has seen some positive analyst commentary over the past few days, with the latest coming from Citigroup on Friday. While the stock is running into some resistance, many have it on breakout watch. JB Hunt (NASDAQ:JBHT) caught a big bid on Friday, rising over 6% on the day. However, currently trading hands for around $93 apiece, shares are well off the 52-week highs near $130. Be careful with this one, which reports earnings Monday. The $45 billion technology consulting company Infosys (NYSE:INFY) reported earnings on Friday. Shares hit new 52-week highs on the day, despite missing revenue estimates and reporting in-line earnings results. Better-than-expected guidance and an increase in its capital return plan likely helped, though. Memory and memory equipment stocks were also in focus in the Nasdaq today, as Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX), Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC) and Micron (NASDAQ:MU) all put together a strong session. Micron is flirting with prior resistance, but a move over $44 to $45 could trigger a breakout. All About AmazonShares of Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) slipped 30 basis points on Friday after the company lost its court case against the Pentagon. The $10 billion cloud contract will now go to either Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) or Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). But that's far from the only reason Amazon stock is in the news day. First, the company's much-discussed Prime Day is set to start next week. Prime Day will kick off on July 15th and run through the 16th. The made-up shopping event isn't unlike Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) Single's Day, while Amazon now attracts others competitors into mix as well. Companies like Best Buy (NYSE:BBY), Target (NYSE:TGT) and Walmart (NYSE:WMT) will be running specials too, trying to keep customers away from the e-commerce juggernaut. As the smart-speaker battle heats up, Amazon is reportedly looking to better its game. The company wants to roll out a high-end Echo device, which could arrive next year. Further, Amazon is also working on an Alexa-powered robot. Codenamed Vesta, the devices apparently will not be ready for mass production this year. Last but certainly not least, Amazon's game-streaming Twitch platform logged more than 2.7 billion hours worth of streaming in the second quarter. For the industry, that accounted for more than 70% of the total. The next closest was Alphabet's (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL) YouTube Live at 735 million hours and 19.5% market share. It was Twitch's second-biggest quarter ever. Bret Kenwell is the manager and author of Future Blue Chips and is on Twitter @BretKenwell. Gold Price Weekly Technical Forecast: Digestion into Bull Pennant Posted: 12 Jul 2019 03:08 PM PDT Hits: 7 Gold Price Weekly Technical Talking Points:
Gold Price Technical Forecast: BullishThe outsized bullish move in Gold prices that showed through June trade has finally found some element of resistance. As looked at earlier this week, Gold prices have started the build of a symmetrical triangle as a long-term zone of resistance has come into play from prior six-year-highs. Buyers haven't yet thrown in the towel, as the initial pullback from that resistance zone has been followed by a continuation of higher-lows on the chart; and yesterday produced a short-term support inflection at a key area that was looked at earlier in the morning around the 1400 psychological level. Gold Two Hour Price ChartChart prepared by James Stanley Taking a step back, and that recent build of a symmetrical triangle is coupled with the very strong move from the month of June. Collectively, this makes for a bull pennant formation, which will offer a directional bias to this recent round of digestion. This can keep focus on the long side of Gold prices, particularly for traders that are looking for an extension of US Dollar weakness after the initial move towards more-dovish policy out of the Federal Reserve. Gold Eight-Hour Price ChartChart prepared by James Stanley Gold Prices Longer-Term While bullish continuation potential remains on a shorter-term basis, traders with longer-term views may still want to wait for a deeper pullback. The zone of resistance that was encountered in late-June that ultimately ended up quelling the advance comes-in from prior six-year-highs, coupled with a Fibonacci level from a longer-term major move. This zone spans from 1421 up to 1433; and since this came into play Gold prices have continued to post lower-highs upon tests of resistance. This can allow for a deeper pullback to zones with longer-term support potential; such as the area around 1375, which lines up with the 2016 swing-high or perhaps even as deep as 1357.50-1366 (the 2017 and 2018 swing highs). A deeper pullback to either of these zones can re-open the door for longer-term bullish strategies in Gold. Gold Daily Price ChartChart prepared by James Stanley The Attraction of Bigger-Picture Bullish Biases in Gold Taking a further step back, and there's a reason that so many are looking at the bullish side of Gold prices on a longer-term basis. From a fundamental perspective, it doesn't appear as though there are many major Central Banks near rate hikes. As a matter of fact, should the Fed cut rates at their July rate decision, this could open the door for even more softening out of the US Central Bank. The Fed would, at that point, join all of the ECB, the BoJ and the PBoC that are in or investigating some form of softer monetary policy. This is also part of the reason that Gold prices exploded last month: As the Fed halted their hawkish approach last year, Gold prices began to firm, but that theme didn't really hit fever pitch until the Fed appeared to begin to the process of capitulation in early-June. This could possibly make for a backdrop that would be roughly similar to what happened in the aftermath of the financial collapse, when global Central Banks were all cutting rates and looking to get looser in the effort of shoring up the economic that pain that had showed. And while that same level of pain has not recently been witnessed, Central Banks are clearly trying to remain in-control to ensure that it doesn't, and the quickest way to make that happen is by softening the economic backdrop via lower rates and softer policy. So, last month's breakout not only makes sense given underlying dynamics but may also be the start of a new theme in Gold prices that could be around for a while. The big question is whether the Fed will actually deliver and, if they do, will they keep the door open for more cuts down-the-road? Dow Jones Today: A Fantastic Friday for Goldman Sachs, Dow, Caterpillar Posted: 12 Jul 2019 02:39 PM PDT Hits: 15 Friday market action in the summer months can be somewhat lethargic, but investors got a respite from that scenario today. One of the driving forces behind the Friday rally was the lingering belief that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this month. That was enough to power the Nasdaq Composite higher by 0.59% while the S&P 500 rallied above 3,000, gaining 0.39%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average continued its move above 27,000, adding 0.82% to finish the week. "Market expectations for lower rates currently sit at 100%, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool. Traders are also pricing in a 20% chance of the Fed cutting by 50 basis points," reports CNBC. In late trading, close to 25 of the Dow's 30 components were higher, but Friday was another troublesome day for the index's healthcare constituents, as all three of the Dow's pharmaceuticals names traded lower. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was the first offender. JNJ slid 4.15% on more than double the average daily volume on its way to shedding about $15 billion in market value. This was after news broke that the Justice Department is pursuing a criminal probe into the company possibly covering up health risks associated with its popular talcum powder. "J&J disclosed in its annual report in February that it had received subpoenas from the Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission related to the ongoing baby powder litigation but did not give more details," according to Reuters. Better News Here With GS, DOW, and CATGoldman Sachs Group (NYSEARCA:GS) added 1.23% after research firm IHS Markit said it is likely the investment bank will reveal a dividend increase next week. Goldman recently forecast an almost 50% bump to its quarterly dividend to $1.25 a share from 85 cents, which is what Markit is expecting, too. On a light news day and below-average volume, chemicals maker Dow Inc. (NYSE:DOW) was the Dow's biggest winner, surging 4.04%. The one news item that possibly sparked the rally in shares of Dow was a report from FactSet. The report highlighted the stock as the member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average with the most potential upside over the next 12 months. The research firm sees Dow stock climbing more than 22% over the next year, a move that would take the shares over $60. Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) jumped 3.28% today. The industrial machinery maker joined DOW on the list of Dow components expected to generate big returns over the next year. FactSet is forecasting almost 12% for shares of Caterpillar over the next year. As it is, the stock is up 8% over the past month and could offer investors a compelling mix of growth and income. Bottom Line: Fun Starts Next WeekSecond-quarter earnings season starts in earnest next week. Financial services, the S&P 500's third-largest sector weight, is the sector that will dominate earnings headlines next week. But due to that group's domestic focus, those reports will not provide much in the way of tariff-related guidance. However, bank earnings could present their own set of challenges for investors. "Kenneth Leon, CFRA Research's bank analyst, says the capital markets, while improved, are likely to be a wild card for big bank earnings this quarter, with year-over-year comparisons challenging for debt underwriting and trading operations," according to CNBC. Bottom line: prepare for some excitement — maybe even some volatility — over the next several weeks, particularly if cyclical sectors like industrials and technology deliver earnings disappointments. Todd Shriber does not own any of the aforementioned securities. Can you get moneyed from fx trading?
